Today 10,500 bricks arrived – chosen to closely match those removed
from the old (now demolished) farmhouse. Though many of the old bricks were
reclaimed by the demolition team, they still left two huge piles of hard core. Clay soil not only requires significantly deeper
footings, but also a deeper hard core fill.
So for the last three days we have been breaking bricks –
and are likely to be continuing to breaking more for at least the next three! So far an estimated 20 tonnes of brick and
concrete have already been broken up by hand (actually by hammers!) ably assisted by Jonathan- a local Loughborough University student - and recycled
into the foundations.
A phone call this morning notified us of a week’s delay in the arrival of the polystyrene insulation so it is likely the arrival of the timber frame may be delayed until early May.
